Building real language access — professional interpreter services, culturally specific patient education materials, provider gender accommodations where religious practice requires it — isn’t something one bilingual physician can solve by being personally fluent in a second language. It’s an infrastructure problem, and it’s exactly the kind of problem clinical leadership, not individual clinical skill alone, is positioned to solve across multiple clinic sites at once.

The research is consistent on what happens when this infrastructure is missing: delayed care, incomplete informed consent, and patients who avoid the health system altogether rather than navigate it without support. For a specialty already carrying outsized stakes around consent and personal decision-making, closing that gap isn’t a soft cultural-sensitivity add-on. It’s core to whether the care being delivered actually works.
